Day 160: Venice

30.6.2013

In the morning we packed and took at train from Vicenza to Venice. The trip took a little bit less than two hours and when we got there we took our bagst to the luggage storage. It took a while though: the line was so long that when we stood in the end of it, we couldn’t even see the door of the storage room. Well, we queued there for a while and when we finally got our bags in, we planned to try to find the tourist information. We got out of the railway station and we all (or at least me) had an hones “ooooh” –moment. So beautiful! Right theren front of us was the Grand Canal with all the gondolas and bridges. We found the tourist information and bought a crappy map for 2,5€. We started to walk towards some tourist attractions but on the way there we found an ok restaurant with decent prices, so we stayed there to have lunch first.

Jonoa / The line

After lunch we continued with what we had started: the tourist attractions, and we bought some ice cream on the way of course. We visited a few churches from outside, famous bridges and squares. At one of the most famous squares you have to pay 50€ for a coffee, or at least that’s what we were told. In those cafés there were little orchestras playing whatever the customers wanted with their violins and all.. Would’ve been nice I guess. After the few tourist places we just walked around the city pretty clueless where we are and tried to find the cutest little canals and bridges where to take pictures.. And of course there were many, even more that you would actually need haha. In the evening we went to have dinner, two courses for 15€ We thought it would be like a starter and a main course but of course it was the Italian way: two main courses. So we were pretty full after it. I had first a vegetable soup and then a steak with fries, Anna had soup as well and chicken breast, Riikka had spaghetti with tomato sauce and fried calamari with fries. Hhuh! And the price was actually not bad at all, especially when you consider the facts that we were in Venice and right next to the Grand Canal with a perfect view!

Ihana pieni kauppa jonne pääsee sisään kanaalin kautta! /  Cute little shop that you could enter from the canal!

After dinner we walked one more street from to the other end and back and had some more ice cream to be sure that we full enough haha. Then we went back to the railway station to get our bags, made a little camp there and had a few rounds of Shanghai. Then we started our hazard trip towards Pula, Croatia!

Days 158-159: Verona & Lake Garda

28.-29.6.13.

On Friday we made a day trip from Vicenza to Verona, to the city of Romeo and Juliet ;) The trip took about an hour and we arrived in warm but slightly cloudy Verona. First we went to the tourist information to get a map and then we found a place to have lunch. We had pizza again and it was delicious! The Italians really do know what they are doing haha. After eating we started our sightseeing tour. First we headed to the tomb of Juliet but we couldn't enter it for free so we skipped it. We continued to the center and on the way there we accidentally found a church a little bit out of the touristic areas and we were the only ones visiting it! It was pretty gorgeous inside. From there we continued to the basic tourist attractions like the balcony of Juliet, many of all the bridges, the central area and finally the amphitheater. As the sun started to set down, we took a train back to Vicenza, and in the evening we didn't do anything special.

Minä ja pari muuta ottamassa kuvaa / Me and a couple of others taking a picture

Ensi kerralla parempi tuuri ;)

On Saturday we went to the Lake Garda. We had heard that it's a beautiful place, and sure it would've been if the weather was nice. First it looked ok, only a little bit of clouds but in the end it was all cloudy and actually quite cold. Thus we just went to a cafe and had some coffee, hot chocolate and beer and played cards the whole day. There were not that many trains from the Lake Garda to Vicenza during the day... We were quite sad because of the weather, it really looked like a beautiful place and I really would've wanted to go swimming.. Better luck next time! ;)

Day 157: Vicenza

27.6.13

The next morning in Milan started with packing and after that Christian drove us to the railway station. We left our bags there and went to the Duomo where we couldn't enter yesterday. We were not allowed to take pics there so if you want to know how it looks, go there haha. Afterwards we took a train to Vicenza where we had an accommodation in a hostel private room (same price as dorms!) right in the heart of the city. The first thing we did was laundry and buying groceries. Then we cooked, put our clothes to dry and went to the city. Vicenza was very tourist friendly: not much tourists and yet there was for example little boards in front of important buildings where you could read what they are etc. We also had some delicious ice cream and walked around until we found a nice little park where they had a couple of street bars open. So we had beer. :D And then we went back to the hostel to get a few more beers and then sleep!

Day 156: Milan

26.6.13

On Wednesday we arrived in Milan in the morning after not so much of sleep. Our couch surfing host Christian was waiting for us there to pick us up. He was a very intelligent guy who works as a conductor in the Opera of Milan, not bad! We went to his place, took a shower, had some breakfast and then went to the city. Christian was with us and I have to admit that I agree with him: he told us that there's not that much to see in Milan. We would have want to visit the Duomo but we were "too naked" to go inside so we went there gain the next day. We walked around for a few hours and saw old buildings, a fancy shopping mall, parks, a castle.. and then we went to a restaurant which was the best part of the day! Of course I had to try pasta in Italy and it was delicious! I've never had pasta that al dente. omnomn. After eating we went back to his place and took a nap. Then we started to look for a hostel in our next destination because this time couch surfing let us down haha. It was a bit harder than expected: Verona is pretty expensive and fully booked. After hours of googling we chose a hostel in Vicenza, less than an hour from Verona. We also booked an apartment in Pula because we agreed that we don't want to use another day in Vicenza trying to find a place. During all this Christian had went out to get some pizza for us, so then we ate again and had a chat before going to sleep. I have to say that this was the first "not so good destination" on our InterRail. If we would have money to shop and to go see some cultural things, it would be great but this time it wasn't the best place for us!

Day 155: Nice, Monaco, Villefranche-sur-Mer

25.6.13

On Thursday we checked out from the hostel and went to the Nice railway station. We left our bags there and took a train to Monaco! There we walked around for a couple of hours in a total hotness and then headed back to the trains. On the way to Monaco we saw a nice looking place from the train and decided to stop there too, since we were not in a hurry. The place is called Villefranche-sur-Mer and oh what a lovely place it was! Not that many tourists, really small beach village with clear water and small allies.. We liked it so much that we stayed there for dinner before going back to Nice. We took 3 pizzas and with drinks it was maybe 15€/person so I think we at least payed less than we would've payed in Nice, and the food was delicious! Then back to Nice where we wandered around for a couple of hours more and bought some food for the first night in the train. At eight we had to be back at the station to get our bags and we made a little camp for us. Some guy who works there came to us to complain something but he didn't speak English and neither did the second guy who the first one called there, so the second one just showed something with his hands that we think was "ok just stay here" haha. At eleven we took a train to Ventimiglia, where we waited around 4 hours (luckily we could stay inside the railwayy station and sleep) and took another train to Milan!

Tytöt meinas jättää mut Nizzaan rauhottumaan haha / The others were planning to leave me at the station in Nice to calm down haha
