Christmas in Finland

Amsterdamissa viikot menee jo todella rutiinin omaisesti koti - toimisto - ruokakauppa - koti akselilla. Pari viikkoa olinkin vähän masiksissa ja varmaan jotain myöhäistä kulttuurishokkiakin oli meneillään, joten miniloma Suomessa ei ois voinut tulla parempaan paikkaan. / Me and R spent Christmas 2014 in Finland, just like the year before. It was soooo great to be back! In Amsterdam the past weeks had been pretty boring, basically running between home - office - grocery store - home and I was a bit down.. I think I maybe even had a little late cultural chock or something. Anyway, the mini holiday in Finland couldn't come at a better time.

Me likey! Amsterdamissa on ollut koko ajan tähän mennessä aika samat kelit: asteita 5-15 ja ajottaisia sateita :-D / During our vacation we just relaxed, met some friends, enjoyed the cold winter days, ate delicious food and played board games. It was so great to just chill, wake up without an alarm, having no plans.. Me likey! Also, I used to be a real winter hater but I have to say that it is pretty awesome that we have such beautiful winters in Finland. Now that I've been in Amsterdam for 3 months, the weather has been all the time almost the same: 5 - 15 celcius warm and a bit of rain :-D

Tällä kertaa ei tämän enempää tarinoita, antaa kuvien puhua puolestaan! / No long stories this time, just a few pics to get you in to the winter mood!

Otin lähes samasta paikasta kuvan kolmena eri päivänä. Ensin näytti tältä:
I took a pic of the same spot on three different days. First it looked like this:

Here we go again!

Pitkä postaustauko, vaikka kauheesti on tapahtunut. Parin kuukauden aikana on vietetty 3 viikkoa Hollannissa, tehty yksi opinnäytetyö ja hankittu harjoittelupaikka. Hollannista. Kyllä.

Long time no blog posts even though a lot has happened.During the past 2 months I spent 3 weeks in Holland, finished my Bachelor thesis and got an internship place. In Holland. Yes.

In the summer I found out about an internship possibility via a friend in Holland. I got his recommendations (thank you!), applied, went to an interview and got the place! We were in the Rosada outlet village when I got the call that I got the place. I might have screamed a bit and I didn’t want to go to the shops in a while since there was a possibility that I just buy everything because of the euphoric feeling. At this very moment I am sitting at the Helsinki-Vantaa airport with a lot of luggage and butterflies in my stomach.

It was easier to leave this time comparing to leaving for Barcelona. I mean mentally. In the morning I was able to stand up straight and didn’t have the need to vomit, like 1,5 years ago, hah. But of course it is more than horrible to say goodbyes to your loved ones. Family and friends. But what can you do. Packing on the other hand was way harder since I had to pack something else than shorts, too. Like 3 jackets for example. I wonder if I will be sweating in Amsterdam where it is nearly 20 degrees and I’m wearing my thickest winter jacket.. ;)

Now I’ll go and eat m second breakfast this morning before the flight. Next time when you here from me I’ll be in Holland. My idea is to write this blog in the same way as I did in Barcelona, a diary kind of a blog. We will see how I’ll manage!

Tot ziens! ;)

Efteling

Seuraavana retkipäivänä suunnattiin huvipuistoon! Lähdettiin käymään siis Eftelingissä, joka on joskus äänestetty Euroopan parhaaksi huvipuistoksi. Tai teemapuistoksi sitä kyllä oikeestaan kutsuisin. Autolla mentiin, ajomatka kesti vajaat 2h.

On the next adventure day we headed to a theme park. Efteling is the name of the park, and it's been ranked as the best theme park in Europe! We went there with the car and it took about 2 hours to get there. We arrived just when the park opened and you can only imagine how excited I was at that point! I was jumping around like little girl haha..

Tehtiin asiaankuuluvat eväät huvipuistoreissulle ;) / Some snacks to eat on the way to the theme park
Aivan uskomaton paikka! Kuvat kertokoon enemmän.

In the beginning we were just walking around and trying to figure out the layout of the park. The whole area had been divided to smaller areas each of them with a theme. First we ended up in an area that had been built with an Arabic style. All the little details.. so cool. We went to a few attractions and continued to the other areas such as the central park and the story forrest.. The place was unreal! May the pictures tell more.

Tämä on siis roskis :D / This is where you put the trash:D

Lounas hollantilaisittain, kipkorn, frikandel, ranskikset ketsupilla ja majoneesilla / The Dutch styled lunch, kipkorn, frikandel, french fries with ketchup and mayo

The place was unreal.. Once again, if you happen to be traveling in the Netherlands, I recommend you to visit other places than Amsteram, too ;)

Amsterdam

A couple of weeks ago I flew to Holland, and here I am writing this post for you guys. I had the lovely morning flight operated by Finnair, so I was in Amsterdam already before 10am. By the way, I am nowadays always flying HKI-AMS-HKI route with Finnair. I  never travel during the holiday season to here, so the flights are always around 180-220€. I tried the cheap airlines for a few times but I realized that it was a bad option for many reasons. Yeah, you could get the flights a bit cheaper but you always have to take a connecting flight from Stockholm/Copenhagen/Riga and the traveling times get longer. Also, when you add the cost of your luggage (included in the price with Finnair) and food (also included in the price, and you have to eat somewhere anyway, either at the airport or in the plane) the total price of the tickets are the same or eaven more expensive than with Finnair.

Pieni maailma. Vaihdettiin pari sanaa ruotsiksi (HYVÄ AINO!!) ja siirryin lounasleivän kimppuun.

So, I arrived in Amsterdam in the morning. R was working, so I spent the day in the city. This time I actually had a plan! First I headed for lunch a little bit outside of the most touristic areas. It is funny how all the tourists walk down the main street, Damrak, even though at the moment it is almost fully under reconstruction. I took a route a few streets away from Damrak and saw zero tourists. I crossed a few canals and found the lunch cafe called Lombardos. Such a lovely little cafe with great food and genuinely nice staff. The waitress took my name for the order, and as I told it she asked if I was Finnish. I asked how on Earth did she know that, and turned out she was Swedish and she recognized my name. Such a small world. We spoke a few words in Swedish (GOOD JOB AINO!!!) and then I got my perfect lunch!

Lombardosista jatkoin Body Worlds näyttelyyn jonka missasin Suomessa.

After lunch I headed to the Body Worlds exhibition which I missed when it was in Finland. Surprisingly I  got the student discount with my Finnish student traveling card. The price was still 18€, but it was worth it. The exhibition was in 6 floors and it consisted of different themes by the human body. The little sciense nerd inside me was really happy, it was so cool! It took  me about 1,5 hours to go through all of the rooms and if I had had a friend with  me to talk with it probably would've taken twice the time. I even had to hurry a bit so that I could by something to eat and a train ticket. I took a pita falafel at Maoz and it was absolutely delicious! Inside the pita bread there was the falafels and hummus that you had to pay extra money for. You could also put stuff in it yourself from the salad buffet, that had different kinds of cheeses, pickles, dressings, olives etc.. Really, really delicious!

You are not allowed to take pictures of the exhibition but I took one of a flying pig while buying the ticket!

Päivän ruuat / The food of the day

Ja sitten junalla kohti Goesia!
And then the train to Goes!

Brussels part 2

The second day in Brussels was a bit cloudy and foggy but that didn't stop us. In the moning we checked out from the hotel, had breakfast and went to see the other side of Brussels than yesterday. Fist we tried to find a flea market that I wanted to visit but we couldn't find it. All in all I think it was quite hard to orientate in Brussels even though usually I am rather good at it.. Anyway, since we couldn't find the flea market, we ended up at Porte de Hall fort. It used to be a gate of a wall that surrounded Brussels earlier. Quite nice!

From Porte de Hal we headed to Justice Palace. The building was so freaking huge that there was no possibility to get a good picture of it with a) my photographing skills and b) phone's camera. We walked up the hill and up there we found a nice view over Brussels even though the sky wa pretty gray.. Also a memorial for the soldiers who fought in the first and the second World War. From the Justice Palace we started to walk to a random direction and on the way we stopped by some beautiful little parks (and there were many of them!)

Näin muutetaan Belgialaiseen tyyliin / This is how you move to yournew apartment in Belgium :P

Justice Palace

Justice Palace ja sotamuistomerkki / Justice Palace and the war memorial

Hyvä me :D No ei siinä mitään, mentiin sitten johonkin pieneen kuppilaan aukion laidalla istumaan. Puolen litran stobe jotain paikallista perus keppanaa ois ollu 1,70€. Että silleen. Hinnoista huolimatta lähdettiin yksien jälkeen kohti Cantillon olutpanimoa.

After a while of walking we ended up by accident to the market place were the flea market was held. They were closing up already so we decided to go for a drink in a pub by the market square. WE picked the pub by the people who were inside it: only local old men. We ordered the most expensive beers on the list, Kriek cherry beer for me and Omer for R. The waiter brought the beer to the table and poured them from the bottles for us, putting up a little show. The price for all this together was 5,90€. I can't believe it! A half liter of some local "normal" beer cost 1,70€. Nice. Despite the prices we decided to leave after one beer and headed to Cantillon Brewery.

Cantillon olutpanimoon pääsi kierroksellejoka maksoi n. 7€ muistaakseni. Kierroksen lopuksi sai vielä maistaa kahta eri lambicolutta. Eli kyseessä on siis perinteinen, vanhanaikaisilla menetelmillä toimiva lambicpanimo.

The entrance fee to the Cantillon brewery was 7€ and it included a tour and two beers in the end of the tour. Cantillon brewery is an old traditional brewery, where only old methods are used. It was founded in the 1930's and it is still producing beer. No modern methods are used at all. It was really interesting to hear about the methods and some history, and see all the maschines that are used. In the end we tasted a traditional lambic Geuze and a raspberry lambic. If you are visiting Brussels, I'd recommend you to go to the brewery!

Iloinen matkaseura / The happy co-traveller

From the brewey we went to have dinner before going to the railway station. We missed the earlier train so we had to wait a while and take a reaaaally slow train. The trip lasted forever... But really it was ok, I was in good company :)
