Amsterdam

Pari viikkoa sitten lensin Hollantiin, ja täältä kirjoittelen tällä hetkelläkin. Mulla oli ihana Finnairin aamulento, joten olin jo ennen kymmentä Amsterdamissa. Lennän muuten nykyään aina HKI-AMS-HKI välit Finnairilla. Koska matkustan aina ns. loma- ja ruuhka-aikojen ulkopuolella, lennot maksaa n. 180-220€. Pari kertaa lensin halpalentoyhtiöillä ja totesin sen tällä kyseisellä välillä huonoksi vaihtoehdoksi. Joo, lennot saattoi saada vähän halvemmalla, mutta aina joutui vaihtamaan Tukholmassa/Kööpenhaminassa/Riikassa sekä matkustusaika venyi. Ja kun lisää hintaan matkalaukun (sisältyy hintaan Finnairilla) + ruuan (sisältyy hintaan Finnairilla, ja jossain sen kuitenkin syö, kentälla tai koneessa) niin saman hintaiseksi se tulee ellei  jopa kalliimmaksi kun Finskin lennot. 

A couple of weeks ago I flew to Holland, and here I am writing this post for you guys. I had the lovely morning flight operated by Finnair, so I was in Amsterdam already before 10am. By the way, I am nowadays always flying HKI-AMS-HKI route with Finnair. I  never travel during the holiday season to here, so the flights are always around 180-220€. I tried the cheap airlines for a few times but I realized that it was a bad option for many reasons. Yeah, you could get the flights a bit cheaper but you always have to take a connecting flight from Stockholm/Copenhagen/Riga and the traveling times get longer. Also, when you add the cost of your luggage (included in the price with Finnair) and food (also included in the price, and you have to eat somewhere anyway, either at the airport or in the plane) the total price of the tickets are the same or eaven more expensive than with Finnair. 

Mutta asiaan. Saavuin siis aamulla Amsterdamiin. R oli töissä,  joten vietin päivän kaupungissa kierrellen. Tällä kertaa olin tehnyt oikeen suunnitelman! Ensimmäiseksi  kävelin lounaalle vähän kauemmaksi turistirysästä. Se on muuten hassua, miten kaikki turistit kävelee sitä "pääkatua", Damrakia, vaikka se on melkein kokonaan työmaa-aluetta tällä hetkellä. Itse kävelin ihan pari katua Damrakilta poispäin eikä siellä näkynyt enää yhtään turistia. Kävelin muutaman kanaalin ylitse ja tulin lounaspaikalleni, eli Lombardosiin. Ihana pieni paikka, hyvää ruokaa ja aidosti mukavaa henkilökuntaa. Tiskillä kysyttiin nimi tilausta varten, ja kun kerroin omani niin tarjoilija kysyi että olenko Suomesta. Vähän hämmentyneenä vastasin että joo, mistä arvasit? Noh, tarjoilija olikin ruotsalainen, ja kuulema tunnisti mun nimen suomalaiseksi. Pieni maailma. Vaihdettiin pari sanaa ruotsiksi (HYVÄ AINO!!) ja siirryin lounasleivän kimppuun. 

So, I arrived in Amsterdam in the morning. R was working, so I spent the day in the city. This time I actually had a plan! First I headed for lunch a little bit outside of the most touristic areas. It is funny how all the tourists walk down the main street, Damrak, even though at the moment it is almost fully under reconstruction. I took a route a few streets away from Damrak and saw zero tourists. I crossed a few canals and found the lunch cafe called Lombardos. Such a lovely little cafe with great food and genuinely nice staff. The waitress took my name for the order, and as I told it she asked if I was Finnish. I asked how on Earth did she know that, and turned out she was Swedish and she recognized my name. Such a small world. We spoke a few words in Swedish (GOOD JOB AINO!!!) and then I got my perfect lunch!

Lombardosista jatkoin Body Worlds näyttelyyn jonka missasin Suomessa. Yllättäen sain kuin sainkin opiskelija-alennuksen VR-opiskelijakortilla! Hinta oli 18€. Aika suolanen, mutta kyllä se maksoi itsensä takaisin. Näyttely oli rakennettu kuuteen kerrokseen ja koostui erilaisista teemoista ihmiskehon mukaan. Mun sisäinen tiedenörtti hyppi ilosta koko näyttelyn ajan, oli se vaan hieno! Aikaa mulla meni koko näyttelyyn varmaan 1,5h, ja jos ois ollut kaveri mukana kenen kanssa höpotellä, ois varmaan mennyt tuplaten tuo aika. Mun piti vähän jopa kiirehtiä, että kerkesin käydä ostamassa eväät ja lipun junaan. Hain Maozista falafelit mukaan, oli ihan taivaallisen hyvää. Pitaleivän sisällä oli salaattia, falafelpyörykät ja lisämaksusta hummusta. Itse sai vielä lisätä salaattipöydästä maustekurkkua, juustoja, kastikkeita, oliiveja jne. Ihan sairaan hyvää!

After lunch I headed to the Body Worlds exhibition which I missed when it was in Finland. Surprisingly I  got the student discount with my Finnish student traveling card. The price was still 18€, but it was worth it. The exhibition was in 6 floors and it consisted of different themes by the human body. The little sciense nerd inside me was really happy, it was so cool! It took  me about 1,5 hours to go through all of the rooms and if I had had a friend with  me to talk with it probably would've taken twice the time. I even had to hurry a bit so that I could by something to eat and a train ticket. I took a pita falafel at Maoz and it was absolutely delicious! Inside the pita bread there was the falafels and hummus that you had to pay extra money for. You could also put stuff in it yourself from the salad buffet, that had different kinds of cheeses, pickles, dressings, olives etc.. Really, really delicious!

Brussels part 2

Toinen päivä Brysselissä oli pilvinen ja sumuinen, mutta eipä se meitä haitannut. Aamulla luovutettiin huone, käytiin aamupalalla ja lähdettiin vähän eri puolelle Brysseliä kuin edellisenä päivänä. Ensin yritettiin ettiä yhtä kirpparia missä olisin halunnut käydä, mutta ei löydetty sitä millään. Brysseli oli muutenkin mun mielestä vähän hankala kaupunki suunnistuksen kannalta, vaikka yleensä osaan suht koht hyvin liikkua uusissakin paikoissa..  Noh, kun ei löydetty sitä kirppistä, päädyttiin Porte de Hal linnakkeen luo. Jos oikein muistan niin tämä taitaa olla osa muuria (tai portti ennemminkin) joka ennen ympäröi Brysseliä. Ihan nätti!

The second day in Brussels was a bit cloudy and foggy but that didn't stop us. In the moning we checked out from the hotel, had breakfast and went to see the other side of Brussels than yesterday. Fist we tried to find a flea market that I wanted to visit but we couldn't find it. All in all I think it was quite hard to orientate in Brussels even though usually I am rather good at it.. Anyway, since we couldn't find the flea market, we ended up at Porte de Hall fort. It used to be a gate of a wall that surrounded Brussels earlier. Quite nice!

Porte de Halilta lähdettiin kohti Justice Palacea. Rakennus oli niin jumalattoman iso ettei siitä saanut millään hyvää kuvaa a) mun kuvaajan taidoilla b) kännykän kameralla. Kivuttiin ylös mäkeä ja sieltä avautui aika kivat maisemat Brysselin ylle, vaikkakin taivas oli aika harmaana. Aukiolla on myös ensimmäisen ja toisen maailmansodan sotilaille pystytetty muistomerkki. Justice Palacelta lähdettiin jatkamaan matkaa ihan randomilla suuntaan X ja matkan varrella piipahdettiin söpöissä puistoissa (joita riitti!).

From Porte de Hal we headed to Justice Palace. The building was so freaking huge that there was no possibility to get a good picture of it with a) my photographing skills and b) phone's camera. We walked up the hill and up there we found a nice view over Brussels even though the sky wa pretty gray.. Also a memorial for the soldiers who fought in the first and the second World War. From the Justice Palace we started to walk to a random direction and on the way we stopped by some beautiful little parks (and there were many of them!)

Hetken aikaa kun oltiin käppäilty päädyttiin ihan vahingossa aukiolle, jossa se kirppis mitä aiemmin etittiin, oli just loppumassa. Hyvä me :D No ei siinä mitään, mentiin sitten johonkin pieneen kuppilaan aukion laidalla istumaan. Valittiin paikka sen perusteella, että siellä istui vanhoja paikallisia papparaisia. Tilattiin olutlistan kalleimmat tuotteet, mulle Kriek kirsikkaolutta (belgialainen erikoisuus, jokaisen turistin must juttu hehe) ja R:lle Omeria. Tarjoilija toi ne meille pöytään ja veti kunnon shown samalla kun kaatoi oluet oppikirjan mukaisesti laseihin. Hinta näille juomille oli yhteensä 5,90€. Ei voi ymmärtää. Puolen litran stobe jotain paikallista perus keppanaa ois ollu 1,70€. Että silleen. Hinnoista huolimatta lähdettiin yksien jälkeen kohti Cantillon olutpanimoa.

After a while of walking we ended up by accident to the market place were the flea market was held. They were closing up already so we decided to go for a drink in a pub by the market square. WE picked the pub by the people who were inside it: only local old men. We ordered the most expensive beers on the list, Kriek cherry beer for me and Omer for R. The waiter brought the beer to the table and poured them from the bottles for us, putting up a little show. The price for all this together was 5,90€. I can't believe it! A half liter of some local "normal" beer cost 1,70€. Nice. Despite the prices we decided to leave after one beer and headed to Cantillon Brewery. 

Cantillon olutpanimoon pääsi kierroksellejoka maksoi n. 7€ muistaakseni. Kierroksen lopuksi sai vielä maistaa kahta eri lambicolutta. Eli kyseessä on siis perinteinen, vanhanaikaisilla menetelmillä toimiva lambicpanimo. 1930-luvulta lähtien siellä on tehty olutta eikä ole otettu käyttöön mitään moderneja menetelmiä. Oli mielenkiintoista nähdä kaikki masiinat ja systeemit ja kuulla miten lambicolutta tehdään. Jos käytte Brysselissä niin suosittelen käymään:) Lopuksi tosiaan vielä maisteltiin maustamatonta lambicia eli Geuzea ja vadelman makuista lambicia.

The entrance fee to the Cantillon brewery was 7€ and it included a tour and two beers in the end of the tour. Cantillon brewery is an old traditional brewery, where only old methods are used. It was founded in the 1930's and it is still producing beer. No modern methods are used at all. It was really interesting to hear about the methods and some history, and see all the maschines that are used. In the end we tasted a traditional lambic Geuze and a raspberry lambic. If you are visiting Brussels, I'd recommend you to go to the brewery!

Panimolta lähdettiin vielä syömään ja sieltä suoraan junaan. Me myöhästyttiin 5min edellisestä junasta, joten jouduttiin odottamaan aika kauanja vielä jotain hidasta junaa.. Matka kesti ihan överi kauan mutta onneksi oli hyvää seuraa :) 

From the brewey we went to have dinner before going to the railway station. We missed the earlier train so we had to wait a while and take a reaaaally slow train. The trip lasted forever... But really it was ok, I was in good company :)

Brussels part 1

Synttäreideni kunniaksi R oli järkännyt ylläripylläri miniloman Brysseliin! Sain kuitenkin tietää tästä pari päivää ennen että sain vähän tutustua kaupungin tarjontaan ja suunnitella että minne mennään ;) Oltiin Brysselissä siis 2 päivää, 1 yö. Vielä jäi juttuja näkemättä ja kokematta mutta parikin päivää riitti ihan hyvin! 

To celebrate my birthday, R had planned a surprise trip to Brussels! I got to know about the trip a few days earlier though so that I could plan a little where I want to go. We were in Brussels for 2 days, 1 night. In two days you can already see a lot of things but of course a lot of things were left for the next time! ;)

Ensimmäisenä päivänä siis matkustettiin junalla Goesista Brysseliin, pari tuntia siinä meni. Käytiin hotellilla viemässä kamat ja lähettiin heti keskustaan lounaalle. Päädyttiin pitkän pohdinnan jälkeen ravintolaan/kahvilaan nimeltä Exki, joka on jonkin sortin luomu/lähiruokapaikka. Oli ihan jees, syötiin jotkut ihan perus patongit. Lounaan jälkeen lähdettiin pienelle turistikierrokselle. Ensimmäisenä suunnattiin "keskustorille", jonka jylhät rakennukset oli aika vaikuttavia!

We traveled to Brussels with the train, it took about two hours. First we took our stuff to the hotel and headed to the city center for lunch. We ended up in Exki, which is some kind of a organic/local food restaurant. It was ok, we had some basic sandwiches. After lunch we went for a little touristic walk in the city. Our first attraction was the Grand Place with its enormous buildings. Pretty impressive!

Grand Placelta lähdettiin kohti Brysselin vihatuinta ja rakastetuinta nähtävyyttä, eli Manneken Pis patsasta. Kyseessä on siis patsas pienestä pissaavasta pojasta. Ympärillä hääräs kyllä jäätävä määrä porukkaa suhteutettuna patsaan kokoon joka on siis alle puoli metriä. Kuvat kertokoon enemmän. Patsaan kulmilta napattiin mukaan mun päivän kohokohta, eli vohveli!

From the Grand Place we headed towards the most loved and hated attraction of Brussels: Manneken Pis. A statue of a little boy who's peeing. There was quite many people there comparing to the size of the statue: less than half a meter. The pics shall tell more. Near the statue we bought the highlight of my day, waffles!

Patsaan luota lähdettiin vuonna 1847 rakennetun "ostoskeskuksen", Galeries Saint-Hubertin luo. Katto kokonaan lasia ja sisällä marmoriveistoksia.. Ihan ok. Budjetti ei tällä kertaa antanut periksi muuhun kuin näyteikkunoiden tuijotteluun, oli sen verran suolaset hinnat näissä luksus putiikeissa. Ehkä joskus, ehkä joskus..

After seeing the statue we headed to Galeries Saint-Hubert which is a shopping "center" built in 1847. The roof was made of glass and inside there were marble sculptures.. Quite alright. This time our budget didn't cover anything else than looking at the shops, the prices were preeeetty high in these luxury boutiques. One day, one day...

Vielä viimeiseksi käytiin St. Michaelin ja St. Gudulan katedraalissa pikaisesti. Ilma oli tosi ihana, aurinko paistoi. Istuskeltiin hetken aikaa kirkon edustalla olevassa puistossa. Katedraalin jälkeen vaihdettiin rennompiin tunnelmiin eli mentiin bisselle :D Käytiin myös shoppailemassa ja syömässä nopeesti, ennen kun siirryttiin illan viimeiseen kohteeseen. Meillähän tosiaan on tällainen "harrastus", että aina uudessa kaupungissa käydään paikallisella kasinolla, ja niin tehtiin nytkin. Siellähän vierähtikin sitten monta tuntia ja R tuttuun tapaan lähti muutamia satoja euroja rikkaampana pois. Kasinolta suunnattiin pitkän päivän päätteeksi hotellille lepuuttamaan :)

Our last attraction was the St.Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral. WE visited it  briefly and spent some time outside too. The weather was beautiful, the sun was shining and we sat for a while in the park near the cathedral. Then, we decided to do something more relaxing (read: had a beer :D ) We also went shopping and ate something quickly. Then it was time for our last destination. WE have this "hobby", that every time that we visit a new city together we go to the local casino. And that's what we did today as well. We spent several hours there and as always R left the casino hundreds of euros richer. After the casino we headed back to the hotel to get some rest :)

Ja kasinolta ei tietenkään oo kuvia...... Palaan vielä Brysseliin toisen postauksen verran. Ens viikolla lähden muuten taas Hollantiin, en malttais millään odottaa!:) 

And of course I have zero pictures from the casino.... I'll write another post of our trip soonish. Next week I'm going to Holland again and I can't tell you how excited I am! :)
