My favourite restaurants in Amsterdam

Viiden kuukauden aikana on tullu käytyä aika paljon ravintoloissa Amsterdamissa ja muuallakin Hollannissa. Etenkin Amsterdam on täynnä ravintoloita, mutta niiden hyvien paikkojen löytäminen on oikeastaan aika hankalaa. Keskusta-alueella on kaikista suurkaupungeista tuttu ravintolakatu, missä tarjoilijat hengailee kadulla ruokalistan kanssa ja yrittää saada mahdollisimman monta turistia sisään. Luonnollisesti tällä kadulla (Damstraat + Oude Doelenstraat) on ihan jäätävä määrä ravintoloita, joista 90% on, noh, suhteellisen huonoja. Pari hyvää pihvipaikkaa tuoltakin kadulta löytyy. Suosittelen tämän kadun ravintoloita jos haluaa päästä halvalla, nopeasti, ja jos on ihan jäätävä nälkä. Muuten kannattaa kävellä kilometri tai kaksi keskustan ulkopuolelle. Ajattelin esitellä teille muutaman suosikkipaikkani, sekä pari "must eat - annosta." En harrasta ravintoloissa kuvaamista joten kuvat on kunkin kuppilan nettisivuilta. / During five months we ate in quite many restaurants in Amsterdam and elsewhere in Holland. Especially Amsterdam is absolutely full of restaurants, but finding the good places is not always that easy. In the center you can find the oh-so-popular restaurant street, like in all the big touristic cities. Waitresses are standing outside and doing their best to get the tourists inside. Naturally this street (Damstraat + Oude Doelenstraat) is full f restaurants, but 90% of them are rather bad. A few good steak places and that's about it. If you want to eat just something, quickly and cheap, this is your place. Otherwise I would recommend you to walk a bit outside of the busiest center. In this post I am going to introduce some of my favourites to you, as well as a few "must eat" dishes. I'm not that much of a restaurant photographer so most of the pics in this post are from the restaurants' websites

Amsterdam on täynnä ihania pieniä kuppiloita, jotka lähes kaikki tarjoilevat myös lounasta. Esimerkiksi Anne Frank talon aivan lähellä sijaitsee kivoja paikkoja, kuten Café de Prins ja Roem. Kokeile esimerkiksi "broodje kroket" tai pannukakku suolaisella/makealla täytteellä. Jos haluaa syödä "lunch with a view" kannattaa suunnata SkyLounge -näköalaravintolaan. Siellä on hinnat Hollannin tasoon verrattuna aika korkeat, mutta ihan perus hintoja suomalaisille. / Amsterdam is full of cozy cafes and most of them serve at least lunch, too. For example near Anne Frank huis there are a lot of nice places, such as Café de Prins and Roem. Try "broodje kroket" or a pancake with salty/sweet toppings. If you want a lunch with a view, go to SkyLounge. The prices are high comparing to the other places in Amsterdam, but not too high.

Oma ehdoton ykköslounaspaikka on Bakhuys. Tässä leipomo-kahvilassa kaikki tuotteet on luomua ja tarjolla on kaikkea pienistä leivoksista pizzoihin. Me otettiin lounaaksi pizza, ja voi että miten hyvää se oli! Pizzapohjalle levitettiin tomaattikastike, ja laitettiin uuniin. Sillä aikaa kun pohja paistui uunissa, kokki heitti sieniä, pekonia ja muita täytteitä pannulle ja paistoi ne nopeasti. Pohja pois uunista, paistetut täytteet päälle ja pizza on kasassa! Tällainen kevyempi, juustoton pizza sopi paremmin kuin hyvin lounaaksi. Namnam. Hyvien tuotteiden lisäksi paikka on muutenkin tosi kiva, ihanan pelkistetysti sisustettu ja kahvilasta on suora näköyhteys itse leipomoon. Sijainti on vähän keskustan ulkopuolella, mutta jos on esimerkiksi menossa käymään Artis Zoo:ssa tai puolustusmuseossa, tämä kahvila on matkan varrella. S u o s i t t e l e n :-) / My absolute favourite place for lunch is Bakhuys. In this bakery cafe you can have all kinds of organic treats. We had some pizza for luch which was absolutely delicious! First they put some tomato sauce on the pizza and put it in the oven. Meanwhile the chef fried some mushrooms, bacon and other ingredients which were then put on the baked pizza. It was a bit lighter than normal pizza, since it didn't have cheese at all (or very little, not sure!) and thus it was the perfect lunch. So yummy. On top of the great eats, the place itself was really cozy. You could even see right inside the bakery through these huge windows as walls. The place is a little bit away from the city, but it's worth it. If you are heading to the Artis Zoo or to the Resistance Museum, Bakhuys is on the way :-) I recommend!

Illalliselle kannattaa suunnata Loetjeen. Ravintoloita on muutama ympäri Amsterdamia ja uusia aukeaa koko ajan. Ravintolasta saa mielettömiä pihvejä ihan pilkkahintaan. Ollaan käyty kyseisessä ravintolassa muutaman kerran työporukalla. Tilataan aina jokaiselle "biefstuk" eli siis ihan nadanlihapihvi ja kastike. Lisäksi tilataan annos ranskalaisia, salaattia ja leipää, joista sitten kukin saa ottaa mitä haluaa. Kastike, mikä pihvin kanssa tulee, on ihan mielettömän hyvää ja siihen kannattaakin tilata tuota leipää dippailtavaksi! Me käydään aina työpaikan lähellä olevassa Loetje aan de Amstel - ravintolassa, ja jos haluaa syödä paikallisten seassa, kannattaa suunnata juuri tuohon ravintolaan! Ravintola on lähellä Amsterdam ArenAa, Heineken Music Hallia ja Ziggo Domea, joten kyseinen ravintola ja esimerkiksi musiikkitapahtuma on helposti yhdistettävissä yhteen iltaan. Siellä pyörii usein myös paikallisia julkkiksia, kuulin huhuja että jalkapallomaajoukkueen maalivahti Cillessenkin käy tuolla ;-) / Loetje is a great place to have dinner. There are a few Loetjes spread around the city, and new ones are opening all the time. They serve unbelievably delicious steaks for a very reasonable price. We've been to this restaurant a couple of times with the people from our office and we've never been disappointed. We usually order "biefstuk" for all of us which is a beef steak with a nice sauce. Side dishes can be ordered to share, and we usually have some fries, salad and bread. The sauce that comes with the steak is soooo delicious and I recommend to dip the white soft bread in it! I've only been to the Loetje aan de Amstel restaurant which is quite far away from the center, but if you want to eat among the local people, go there. It's pretty close to Amsterdam ArenA, Heineken Music Hall and Ziggo Dome so it's easy to combine an event and Loetje in one evening. Some local celebs also go there, I've heard a rumor that even Cillessen, the goalkeeper of the national football team goes there ;-)

Loetje

Jos haluaa syödä astetta fiininpää ruokaa miellyttävässä miljöössä, kannattaa varata pöytä De Plantagesta. Käytiin työkaverin kanssa tuolla syömässä syntymäpäivänäni, ja paikka osoittautui todella hyväksi. Palvelu on tosi hyvää, ruoka maukasta ja ravintola on tosi kaunis. Söin tuolla risottoa joka oli ihan sairaan hyvää. Meitä vähän nauratti kun saatiin ruokalistat käteen eikä ymmärretty puoliakaan ruokien nimistä, mutta saatiin kummatkin tilattua mieluisat annokset. Viereisessä pöydässä ollut pariskunta kamppaili ilmeisesti saman ongelman kanssa, ja kun heidän annokset tuotiin pöytään, heidän piti kysyä tarjoilijalta että mitä niissä annoksissa oikein on :-D Eli kyseessä on siis ehkä vähän hienostuneempi ravintola, mutta hinnat on kuitenkin ihan perusluokkaa. Plussaa hyvästä viinilistasta! / If you want to have a slightly fancier dinner in a beautiful environment, you should reserve a table from De Plantage. We went here for my b-day dinner with my colleague and it turned out to be a really nice place. The service was excellent, food was tasty and the restaurant is super beautiful. We had to laugh a little though because we couldn't understand most of the things on the menu but we ended up ordering just the perfect dishes. In the ext table there was a couple who had the same problem and when their dishes came to the table they had to ask the waiter that what was in them :-D So, the place is a little bit fancier (not a fine dining place) but the prices are pretty normal. A big plus for the nice wine menu!

De Plantage

Tässä nyt joitakin vinkkejä Amsterdamiin matkaaville. Ajattelin tehdä vielä erillisen postauksen paikallisesta ruokakulttuurista, kunhan kerkeän. Ja niin, tällä hetkellä istun siis omassa huoneessa Helsingissä. Mutta blogissa pysytään vielä Amsterdamin tunnelmissa! /So here you have a few tips for eating in Amsterdam. I was planning to write another post about the local food culture when I have the time and if you guys are interested! And just that you know, I'm now back in Finland. Unfortunately. But the blog will still focus on Amsterdam and I still have lots of things to share with you! :-)

Book worms ahoy!

Yhtenä viikonloppuna keskustassa haahuillessa päädyin käymään American Book Centerissä. Kyseessä on ainoastaan englanninkielisiä kirjoja myyvä jättikirjakauppa. Paras kirjakauppa missä oon ikinä käynyt! Kirjoja on kolmessa kerroksessa ja aivan laidasta laitaan. Jos jotain kirjaa ei tästä kaupasta löydy, sitä ei todennäköisesti tarvitse lukea. / Once when I was wandering in the city center I ended up in the American Book Center. It's a book store in the heart of Amsterdam that sells books in English. It was by far the best book store I've ever been to! The store is in three floors and you can find books about absolutely everything. If there is a book that does not exist in this store, it's probably not worth reading. 

Vaikka ei olisi mikään varsinainen lukutoukka, kannattaa käydä kyseisessä kaupassa. Tunnelma siellä on todella ihmeellinen: yhtäkkiä tulee sellainen olo, että mun on luettava _kaikki_ kirjat mitä täältä löytyy. Kaupasta löytyi myös tosi hauska "sokkotreffi" -osasto. Kirjat oli paketoitu ruskeaan paperiin, ja päälle oli liimattu tarroja joista selviää minkälainen kirja on kyseessä. Eli ostat kirjan ilman että tiedät siitä muuta kuin pääteemat. Hauska idea! / Even though you didn't like reading that much, you should visit the store. The atmosphere is extraordinary: suddenly you feel like you have to read every single one of the books in the store. They also have a nice "blind date" section, where you can buy a book without really knowing what it is. All the books are wrapped in paper and the packages have stickers that tell you the main themes of the book. I really like this idea!

Itse tykkään lukea kirjoja, mutta valitettavasti aika ei riitä kaikkien haluamani kirjojen lukemiseen. American Book Centeristä olen ostanut nyt yhteensä 3 kirjaa, joista olen ehtinyt lukea 1 kokonaan ja toisesta puolet. Tekisi mieli käydä tuolla ehkä vielä kerran, hakemassa pari hyvää kirjaa varastoon.. Katsotaan miten käy ;-) / I enjoy reading books but unfortunately I don't have the time to read everything that I want. I've bought 3 books at the American Book Center so far and I've only finished 1, next one is half way through. I'm still considering visiting the store just one more time before going home.. We will see ;-)

The Dutch Carnaval!

Pari viikkoa sitten pääsin ensimmäistä kertaa mukaan hollantilaisiin karnevaaleihin! Olen kuullut näistä juhlista niiiin paljon juttuja ja olin tosi utelias näkemään että mistä on oikein kysymys. Toissa vuonna vietin samoja karnevaaleja Barcelonassa (tai Sitgetissä oikeestaan) joten osasin ehkä vähän odottaa mitä tuleman pitää.. tai sitten en. Hollannissa karnevaalia vietetään vaan osassa mata: suurimmat juhlavuudet on Brabantissa ja Limburgissa, mutta esim. myös Zeelandin joissain osissa juhlitaan. Amsterdamissa karnevaalia ei vietetä ollenkaan. Minä + 7 poikaa matkustettiin Tilburgiin,eli Brabanin provinssin alueelle viettämään karnevaaleja. / A few weeks ago I got to experience my first ever Dutch Carnaval. I have heard so many stories about it that I was really curious to see it myself. Two years ago I celebrated the same carnaval in Barcelona (or in Sitget actually) so I had some expectations.. which were wrong. In Holland the carnaval is celebrated only in a few areas: mainly in Brabant and Limburg, and in some parts of Zeeland. In Amsterdam carnaval is not celebrated at all. Me +  guys headed to Tilburg, which is in Brabant.

Hollantilaiseen karnevaaliin kuuluu olennaisesti asut, johon kaikki pukeutuu. Ei siis ainoastaan ne, jotka ottaa saa itse kulkueeseen. Hollantilaiseen karnevaaliin kuuluu olennaisesti myös olut, olut, olut, olut ja öh.. olut. Eli käytänössä päivä/ilta meni jotakuinkin näin: saavuttiin Tilburgiin yksiöön, joka kuului yhden seurueemme pojan tyttöystävälle. Hetken aikaa istuskeltiin partsilla ja juotiin olutta. Sitten vaihettiin asut (pojat oli pinguja ja itse olin pupu :-D) ja lähettiin keskustaan. Keskustassa oli pari eri karnevaalialuetta, joista sai ostaa sitä olutta. Kaiuttimissa raikaa hollantilainen kaljottelumusiikki ja ihmiset lapsista vanhuksiin tanssii keskenään. Tietyin väliajoin jengi innostuu aina "tanssimaan" poloneesia, eli porukka kiertää aluetta/juhlatelttaa letkassa. Ja tätä jatketaan koko ilta. Olutta, lauluja ja tanssia. Me oltiin karnevaaleissa siis vaan yksi ilta, kun oikeasti karnevaalit alkoi jo keskiviikkona ja päättyivät ilmeisestikin maanantaina. Limburgissa karnevaalit alkaa jo marraskuussa. / Costumes are in a really important role in the carnaval. Everyone is dressed up, not only those who take part in the parade. Other important factors in the carnaval are beer, beer, beer, beer and... well, beer. So basically this is how our day went: first we drove to Tilburg and took our stuff to a one-room apartment where we were staying the night (owned by a girlfriend of one of the guys, thanks Ireen! :-) ) For a while we sat there on the balcony and had some beers. Then we changed into our costumes (guys were penguins and I was a bunny :-D) and headed to the city center. There were a few carnaval areas in the city, where they played loud Dutch music and sold beer. The city was full of people of all ages dancing and singing around. Every once in a while people got into a little polonaise dance around the party areas/tents. And this is what we did all night haha. Beer, songs and dancing. We only celebrated one evening, while the real carnaval started already on Wednesday and ended on Monday. In Limburg they started the celebrations already in November, can you imagine? 

Karnevaaleissa soitettava musiikki on todella.. erikoista. Lauluissa ei ole oikeastaan mitään järkeä, välillä lauletaan pupusta jolla on nenällä ranskalainen ja välillä siitä kuinka halutaan herätä joka aamu olut kädessä. Tässä pari esimerkkiä: / The music that is played in the carnaval is.. interesting. The songs are not really making any sense: one of the songs was about a bunny who had a french frie on his nose, and another one was about always wanting to wake up with a beer. Here we have a few examples: 

Vuoden 2015 virallinen (?) karnevaalibiisi, jonka kertsissä siis lauletaan vapaasti suomennettuna "haluan aina herätä olut kädessä". Ei lisättävää. / The official (?) carnaval song 2015: "Always waking up with a beer in my hand". Nothing to add here.

Toinen järjetön esimerkki jossa lauletaan "de poes van tante Loes die heeft een kater". Tämän voi kääntää kahdella tavalla. Poes tarkoittaa kissaa, samalla tavalla kuin englannin kielinen sana "pussy". Eli sanalla on siis toinenkin merkitys :-D Kater taas tarkoittaa miespuolista kissaa, tai vaihtoehtoisesti krapulaa. Eli lauseen voi kääntää näin: "Täti-Loesin kissalla/"pussylla" on kollikissa/krapula". Kukin kääntäköön miten haluaa :-D / Another insane example is the song with the lyrics "de poes van tante loes die heeft een kater". You can translate it in two ways: de poes means "pussy", in its both meanings. Kater again can be a male cat, or a hang over. So you could roughly translate the whole sentence about like this: "The pussy(cat) of aunt-Loes has a male cat OR a hang over. Your call ;-)

Sunnuntaina karnevaalit jatkui paraatin (ja oluen) merkeissä, mutta rauhallisemmin kuin lauantaina. Itse lähdin siinä klo 19 aikoihin junalla kohti Amsterdamia, ja pojat lähti autoilla kohti Zeelandia. / On Sunday we continued the carnaval by watching the parade (and drinking beer), but it was not as special as Saturday. I went home around 7pm to Amsterdam and the guys headed back to Zeeland.

Historia karnevaalin takana johtaa katolilaisuuteen ja paastoamiseen (kiitos Mirkalle näistä tiedoista! :-) ) mutta en nyt lähde enempää avaamaan kyseista aihetta. Syynä se, että tällä nykypäivän karnevaalilla ei ole oikeasti _mitään_ tekemistä tuon alkuperäisen karnevaalin kanssa.  / The history of the carnaval goes back to the catholic church and fasting (thanks to Mirka for the info!) but I wouldn't go to deep with the history.. Since the modern carnaval doesn't really have anything to do with it.

By the Sea

Toissa viikonloppuna käytiin vähän reippailemassa meren äärellä ja metsässä. Suomalaisena tuntui vähän hassulta, että piti matkustaa autolla puolisen tuntia että pääsi metsään.. Amsterdamissa sen vielä ymmärtäisi, mutta nyt oltiin kuitenkin Zeelandissa.. Paikan nimi on Schouwen, joka siis sijaitsee Zeelandin provinsissa. Rantoja riittää niin pitkälle kun silmä kantaa ja rantahiekat on täynnä simpukankuoria. Ilmakin oli aivan mahtava, aurinko paistoi eikä tuulikaan ollut liian kova. Oli ihanaa päästä luontoon rauhottumaan! Täksi viikonlopuksi onkin sitte luvattu kaatosadetta 24/7, katotaan mitä kivaa sitä keksis! :-D /Two weeks ago we spent a sunny Sunday by the beach and in the woods. For a Finnish person it felt a bit weird that you had to travel 30min with the car to go into the woods.. I would've understood it if we were in Amsterdam, but we were in Zeeland so... The name of the area is Schouwen. There are so any beaches there that you can always find a peaceful spot and the beaches are full of shells! The weather was beautiful: the sun was shining and the wind was not too hard. It was great to get some fresh air and relax in the nature! This weekend the weather forecast is a bit worse: rain, rain, rain and more rain. We'll see what we come up with this time! :-D

Museums of Amsterdam

Amsterdamia suositellaan matkakohteeksi usein taiteen ja museoiden ystäville. Täältä löytyy Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh - museo ja muut, mutta myös paljon muuta! En itse ole ollenkaan kiinnostunut "klassisesta" taiteesta (voiko noin ees sanoa? onko tommosta termiä olemassa? :-D) eikä museot noin yleisellä tasolla miellytä. Uskallan kuitenkin sanoa, että Amsterdamista löytyy ihan jokaiselle ainakin yksi mielenkiintoinen museo. Me ollaan tähän mennessä käyty Anne Frank museossa, oikealta nimeltään Anne Frank huis, tiedemuseo / -keskus Nemossa ja Hollannin sotamuseossa. / Amsterdam is often described as he perfect destination for art and museum lovers. In Amsterdam you can visit the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum and other "important" museums, but also much more! Personally I am not interested in classical art (is that even he right word for it? can I say that? :-D) and I don't visit museums that much. Still even people like me can find interesting museums in Amsterdam! We have visited so far the Anne Frank museum, science museum / science center Nemo and the Dutch Recictance museum. 

Anne Frank museo oli todella pysäyttävä, niinkuin odottaa saattoi. Toissa vuonna käytiin InterRail-reissulla Auschwitzissa, joka oli myös erittäin karu kokemus, mutta Anne Frank museo oli taas aivan erilainen kertomus holokaustista. Ainakin itselle tulee holokaustista ensimmäisenä mieleen vain työ- ja teloitusleirien hirveät tapahtumat, mutta harvemmin tulee ajateltua niitä jotka joutuivat piileskellä koko sodan ajan. Ei kunnolla ruokaa, ei saa käydä ulkona, ei saa puhua ja niin edelleen.. Aika hyvin sai taas ravisteltua omaa ajatusmaailmaa, kuinka kiitollinen sitä onkaan kaikesta! Anne Frank talosta lisää TÄÄLLÄ ja Auschwitz reissusta voit lukea lisää TÄÄLLÄ. Ja vielä pieni vinkki niille jotka haluavat käydä Anne Frankin talossa: osta liput hyvissä ajoin etukäteen. Liput tammikuun loppuun piti varata n.1kk etukäteen, eli turistirysän ollessa pahimmillaan kesä-elokuussa, liput pitää ostaa varmaan parikin kuukautta etukäteen.. Toki  ilman ennakkolippujakin pääsee vierailulle, mutta silloin täytyy jonottaa. Ja jonotusaika on vähintään 1,5h. Ennakkolipulla pääsee jonon ohi. Lippuja voi ostaa netistä Anne Frank talon sivuilta, jonka tuossa aiemmin jo linkitin. / Visiting the Anne Frank house was a really powerful experience as you could expect. A few years back I visited Auschwitz during our InterRail trip, which was also an extremely horrible experience, but the Anne Frank museum gave a whole new perspective to the holocaust. If I think about holocaust, the first thing that comes to my mind are the work and death camps. I hadn't really thought about the people who had o go into hiding: not enough food, not able to go outside, not allowed to talk during the day and so on.. Visiting the Anne Frank house really made me think about my own life and how grateful I am for everything! You can read more about the Anne Frank house HERE and about our visit to Auschwitz HERE.

Nemo Science Center vastaa aika lailla Suomen Heurekaa. Amsterdamin versio on toki isompi, ja sieltä löytyy mielenkiintoista nähtävää ja tekemistä myös aikuisille. Muistaakseni koko center oli viidessä kerroksessa, joista pari ensimmäistä kerrosta oli enemmän tai vähemmän lapsille suunnattuja. Muissa kerroksissa oli enemmän nuorille ja aikuisille kiinnostavia aiheita, kuten uusinta teknologiaa ja ties mitä härpäkkeitä. Nemo oli mielestäni kiva paikka juuri sen takia, että siellä oli todella paljon erilaisia juttuja. Me kävimme Nemossa R:n, siskoni Veeran ja hänen kaverin Saran kanssa, ja aika nopeasti mekin jakauduttiin pareihin / kuljeskeltiin yksinään ympäri Nemoa, kun kaikkia tuntui kiinnostavan vähän eri aihepiirit. / Nemo Science Center is a funny science center for kids and adults. I think the whole exhibition was in 5 or even 6 floors, the first two were more for kids and the rest was interesting to adults, too. All kinds of new technology stuff and other cool machines and so on. I personally liked Nemo a lot, and one of the reasons behind that is that there really was something interesting to everyone. I visited the center with R, my sister Veera and her friend Sara, and pretty quickly we divided into two pairs or wondered around the museum individually sine every one of us was interested in different things.

Dutch Resistance Museum oli hetken mielijohteesta valittu myrskyisen lauantaipäivän kohde. Tää oli itseasiassa R:n valinta, kun aiemmin se olen ollut oikeastaan minä joka on päättänyt että missä käydään kun ollaan Amsterdamissa :-D Sotamuseo oli myös mielenkiintoinen paikka. Aluksi näytti että museo on tosi pieni, mutta loppujen lopuksi meillä meni yli 2h kiertää koko museo, ja loppupuolisko vielä pienessä kiireessä kun sulkemisaika lähestyi. Paikka oli aika sokkeloinen ja toooodella yksityiskohtainen. Plussaa siitä että hintaan kuului audiokierros halutessaan. Saatiin mukaan semmoiset pienet "kapulat", joilla aina skannattiin koodi seinästä ja sitten sieltä kapulasta alkoi kuulumaan puhetta. Mun makuun kierros kesti ehkä vähän turhankin pitkään, mulla alkoi loppumetreillä kiinnostus vähän laskemaan.. Mutta toisaalta R tykkäsi todella paljon. Lapsille oli myös oma puoli museossa, missä asiat oli esitetty vähän yksinkertaisemmin. Suosittelen paikkaa etenkin 2. maailman sodasta kiinnostuneille! / Dutch Resistance Museum was our destination on one cold and stormy Saturday. It was actually R who got to choose where we would go because usually we've just been to places where I want to go :-D I enjoyed the resistance museum, too. First the museum seemed to be really small, but in the end our visit took us more than 2 hours. We even had to hurry a bit and skip some parts because the closing time was getting closer. The museum is like a small maze and reeeeally detailed! They also offer a free audio tour, which was really nice. For me the tour was even a bit too long and in the end I was getting a bit tired.. But then again R really liked it, I think this was his favourite of all the museums we've been to. There was also a smaller tour for kids, so this is also a nice museum for the whole family! I would recommend this place especially to those who are interested in the events of the 2nd WW.

TonTon Club

Nopea vinkki Amsterdamissa liikkuville: TonTon Club. Pelihallin ja pubin yhdistelmä, jossa aikuiset pääsee pelailemaan pelejä hyviä oluita nautiskellen! Osa paikasta on varattu kokonaan vanhoille arcade-peleille, missä pääsee pelaamaan esimerkiksi erilaisia flippereitä. Pubiosiossa voi pelata lautapelejä tai pulahtaa pallomereen. Olutvalikoima koostui suurimmaksi osaksi paikallisten panimoiden, kuten Brouwerij de Praelin (joka on esiintynyt pariinkin otteeseen täällä blogissa, löytyy "pubs" tunnisteen alta) ja Brouwerij 't IJn, oluista. / A quick tip for those who are planning a visit to Amsterdam: TonTon Club. This place is a mixture of a game hall and a pub, where adults can play all kinds of games and have some quality beers! A part of the place is full of old arcade games only, where you can for example play some cool old flippers. In the pub part you can play traditional board games or take a dip in the ball pit. The beer selection includes many beers from the local breweries, such as Brouwerij de Prael (which has been mentioned in this blog a couple of times before, you can find those posts under the tag "pubs") and Brouwerij 't IJ. 

Törmäsin joskus Facebookissa kyseiseen paikkaan, ja yhtenä lauantai-iltana oltiin keskustassa ja ajateltiin R:n kanssa käydä katsomassa että mikä paikka tämä oikein on. Ei ajateltu että viihdyttäisiin kovinkaan kauaa, mutta loppujen lopuksi taidettiin pelata kaiken maailman pelejä monta tuntia :-) / I found this place a while ago in Facebook and one Saturday evening we decided to give it a go with R, since we were in the neighborhood. We were planning to just quickly check how it is, but in the end we spent several hours there, just playing and having a few beers :-)

Football culture in the Netherlands

Jalkapallo on erittäin suuressa osassa Hollannin kulttuurissa. Oikeastaan kaikki on edes jotenkuten perillä mikä Eredivisie-sarjassa on tilanne. En tiedä tuleeko teille yllätyksenä, mutta minulle ainakin tuli, miten tosissaan jalkapallo täällä otetaan. Pelit päättyy usein tappeluihin ja stadioneilla pyörii poliiseja joka nurkassa. Edellisiä jalkapallokulttuuriin liittyviä postauksia voit lukea täällä ja täällä. / Football is in a huge role in the Dutch culture. I think almost everyone in this country is aware of how the situation in Eredivisie (the highest league in Holland) is at the moment. I don't know if it surprises you but it sure did surprise me how seriously people take football here. Usually there are some fights etc during game days and the stadiums are full of security men and police. My previous posts about the football culture you can read here (sorry only in Finnish! let's see if I have tie to translate it) and here.

Pari viikkoa sitten oltiin kattomassa Feyenoord - Twente ottelua Rotterdamissa. Kyseessä oli tärkeä peli, koska joukkueet olivat peräkkäin sarjassa ja Twente olisi voitolla mennyt Feyenoordin ohi. Oli siis oletettavissa, että tunteet käy kuumana. / A few weeks go we went to see a game, Feyenoord - Twente. It was an important game because Twente was right behind Feyenord in the league. So we were expecting for the atmosphere to get... tense.

Kun jonotettiin stadionille sisään, saapui Twenten kannattajat busseilla. Busseista kuulu ihan jäätävä melu, jengi hakkasi ikkunoita, huusi täyttä kurkkua, heilutteli nyrkkejä jne.. Bussit ajettiin stadionille sisään suoraan vierasjoukkueen kannattajille tarkoitetulle alueelle. Rautaportit sulkeutuivat, ja vasta sen jälkeen kannattajat päästettiin bussista ulos ja Feyenoord kannattajia päästettiin taas stadionille sisään. / When we were in the queue to get in the stadium, the Twente supportes arrived with their buses. The noice was unbelievable: banging on the windows of the bus, yelling and some showing the middle finger etc.. you know. The buses drove inside the stadium in a special area that is surrounded with fences. Big gates were closed and then the Twente supporters were allowed to go out of the buses and Feyenoord supporters were let inside the stadium again.

Meillä oli istumapaikat Twenten kannattajien viereisessä katsomossa. Nämä katsomot on erotettu toisistaan metrien korkeuteen ulottuvalla pleksiseinällä ja ylhäällä on vielä semmonen verkko, joka estää tuon seinän ylittämisen kiipeämällä. Koko ottelun ajan Twenten kannattajat hakkasi sitä pleksiä minkä kerkesivät, huutelivat, heittelivät kaikkea roinaa Feyenoord-katsomoihin jne.. Jossain vaiheessa tunteet kävi niin kuumana että Twenteläiset alkoivat tappelemaan vartijoiden, poliisien ja vähän toistensakin kanssa. Järkevää ;-) Loppu matsin katsomoiden välissä, pleksin kummallakin puolella seisois koko katsomon matkalta poliiseja. / Our seats were next to the area were Twente supporters were seated, which is surrounded by a high plexiglass wall and a kind of a net is above the supporters which makes it impossible to climb to the other side. The whole game the Twente supporters were banging on the wall, yealling and throwing all kinds of things over the wall. At some point it got so intense that they started fighting with the security & policemen. Clever! The end of the game policemen were standing on both sides of the wall all the way from the front to the back.

Tällä keraa peli päättyi meidän kannalta hyvin, 3-1 voittoon. Kun Feyenoord kannattajat poistuivat stadionilta, Twenten kannattajat jäivät vielä omaan katsomoonsa odottelemaan. Vierasjoukkueen kannatajat joutuvat aina odottelemaan 30-60min omassa katsomossaan ennen kuin saavat poistua, turvallisuussyistä. Ja tuon odottelunkin jälkeen he saavat vain kävellä omiin busseihinsa, jotka ovat edelleen siellä heidän omalla suljetulla alueellaan, ja bussit ajetaan suoraan pois. / This time the game ended well from our point of view, 3-1 win. When Feyenoord supporters left the stadium, Twente supporters had to stay for a while still. The supporters of the guest team always have to wait from 30 to 60 minutes to leave the stadium, for security reasons. And after that they are still guided straight back to the buses and home. 

Tämä toisen joukkueen kannattajien vihaaminen ei vaan mene mun jakeluun. Vielä vaikeampi oli ymmärtää koko asiaa seuraavan viikon tapahtumien jälkeen: Ajax kannattajien "klubitalo" (jonka ohi pyöräilen joka päivä) tuhopoltettiin yöllä, ja ensimmäisenä epäillään tietenkin Feyenoordin kannattajia. Ilmeisesti vielä ei olla saatu tekijöitä kiinni, mutta varma juttuhan se on että asialla ovat olleet jonkin toisen joukkueen kannattajat. Kysyn vaan, että miten ihmeessä tämä auttaa toista joukkuetta pärjäämään paremmin / vaikuttaa Ajaxin peliin mitenkään? / I really don't get the hating the other team's fans - culture here. And it got even harder for me to understand after what happened next: the club house of the supporters of Ajax (which I pass everyday on my way to work) was burned down last week. And they think Feyenoord supporters did it. Of course this is not confirmed yet, but most likely the people behind this are supporters of one of the football clubs here. I'm just wondering that how does this make the other teams' players perform better or affect the Ajax players in any way?

Koko jalkapallokulttuuri täällä on asia, jota ei oikein voi käsittää ellei sitä koe. Eikä välttämättä silloinkaan. Mutta jälleen kerran suositttelen ostamaan liput peliin jos Hollannissa matkustelee, kyseessä on todellakin elämys jota ei Suomessa (tai monessa muussakaan maassa) voi kokea! / The whole football culture here is something I can't really describe, you have to experience it. And still you might not understand it. But if you are traveling in Holland, I suggest you to go to a game. It sure is an experience you wont get anywhere else!
