Chocolate sprinkles on bread for lunch - and other cultural differences

Ajattelin kirjoittaa hiukan kulttuurieroista. Niistähän saisi kirjoittettua vaikka kirjan, mutta ajattelin lähestyä aihetta omalta kannaltani, eli millaisia eroja koen joka päivä. Painotan vielä, että varsinkin työhön liittyvät erot, eivät välttämättä ole yleistettävissä. /  I want to share some of m experiences of cultural differences between Finland and Holland. I want to emphasize that these are m opinions and of course they cannot be generalized. Especially the experiences from my internship.

Ensimmäinen kulttuuriero tulee esiin heti aamulla. Työt alkavat vasta kello 9, joten herään vasta kahdeksan aikoihin. Suomessa olen tottunut perus toimistoaikojen olevan 8-16, mutta täällä on ilmeisesti aika yleistä, että työt alkavat 8.30-9.00 aikaan. Lähden töihin 8.45 pyörällä, mikä onkin seuraava ero. Tottakai Suomessakin pyöräillään työmatkoja, mutta täällä pyöräillään ihan eri mittakaavassa. Tiesitkö että Hollannissa on enemmän pyöriä kuin asukkaita? Pyöräilykulttuurin huomaa helposti myös julkisilla liikkuessa. Kun sää on hyvä, metrossa on todella vähän ihmisiä ja aina saan istumapaikan. Kun sataa, on metrot niin täynnä että hyvä kun mahtuu sisään. Pyöräillessä taas on aika yleistä "juuttua ruuhkaan", eli pyöräteillä saattaa olla niin paljon porukkaa että on pakko ajaa vähän hiljempaa ja kiltisti vaan seurata edellä olevaa. / The first difference can be realized when I wake up. Our office opens at 9am which means that I can sleep until 8am. In Finland the offices usually open at 8am and close at 4pm. I take the bike to work, which is the next difference. Of course people in Finland go to work by bike as well, but here it is total different. Did you know that there are more bikes than people in Holland? You can sense the biking culture in the public transportation, too. When the weather is good, there are not that many people in the metro and you can easily find a free seat. When it is raining, you can barely fit in the metro. When biking, it is pretty normal to get stuck in a "traffic jam", meaning that there are so many bikes on the bicycle path that you need to slow down and just follow the person in front of you.   

Töihin saavun yleensä ensimmäisenä vähän ennen yhdeksää. Muut tulevat yleensä tasan yhdeksältä tai liukuvasti 9-9.30. Tässä siis seuraava ero. Suomessa yleensä oletetaan että töihin tullaan 10-15 minuuttia ajoissa, täällä on ihan okei tulla vartti myöhässä. Tai näin ainakin meidän toimistolla. / I am usually the first one to arrive at the office a bit before 9am. The others usually arrive a bit after 9am, even 9.30am. In Finland I am used to going 10-15 minutes earlier than my shift starts, but here it is ok to arrive 15 minutes later. At least at our office.

Seuraava konkreettinen kulttuuriero tulee lounasaikaan. Lounaaksi syömme aina salaattia ja leipää, ei muuta. Ja salaattia tehdään siis yksi annos, sellainen minkä Suomessa vetäisin yksin lounaaksi, ja tämä sitten jaetaan 4 tai 5 ihmisen kesken. Sitten vähän leipää. Yleensä yksi pala leipää syödään juuston/kinkun kanssa, ja yksi maapähkinävoin/suklaaströsseleiden kanssa. Kesti vähän aikaa tottua tähän ruokakulttuuriin, aluksi alkoi vatsa kurnimaan jo vartin päästä lounaasta haha. / The next difference occurs during lunch. We always only eat salad and bread when in Finland we have a full warm meal. And the salad that we have is one portion, the size of a one-person lunch salad in Finland, and it is divided to 4 or 5 people. After the salad we have a few slices of bread, usually one with ham/cheese and one with peanut butter/chocolate sprinkles. It took a while to get used to this and in the beginning I was hungry 30 minutes after lunch haha.

Työt loppuu virallisesti 17.30, eli lounastauko lisätään 8 tunnin päälle. Oikeasti olen lähtenyt töistä klo 17.30 kerran, maksimissaan kaksi. Täällä arvostetaan (ja vaaditaan) todella paljon, jos teet töitä vähän pidempään. Yleensä lähdetään kaikki kuuden aikaan kotiin. / My day at officially ends at 5.30pm, since lunch break is not included in the 8 hour day. But honestly it has been once or twice that I really left at 5.30pm. It is highly appreciated here that you always work a bit later and show your interest towards the job. Most of the times we go home around 6pm.

Seuraava kulttuuriero tulee vastaan, jos minun täytyy käydä kaupassa töiden jälkeen. Kaupat menee kiinni kuudelta, ruokakaupat kahdeksalta. Torstaisin kaikki kaupat ovat pitempään, eli yleensä kahdeksaan asti auki. Tämä on välillä melko ärsyttävää, koska kaikki hankinnat pitää suunnitella todella tarkkaan. Ruokaa onneksi saa aina, mutta jos on oikeasti kova tarve jollekin käyttötavaralle (esimerkiksi pyörän lampulle.....), niin etpä sitä välttämättä heti saa. Itselle kävi juuri niin, että pyörän takavalo ei toiminutkaan, mutta en voinut sitä pariin päivään mistään ostaakaan. Mietin  että jos poliisit olisi pysäyttäneet, olisiko niille kelvannut selitykseksi että kaupat on aina kiinni kun itse voisin siellä asioida? / The next cultural difference hits me when I need to buy something. The shops close at 6pm, groceries at 8pm. This can be annoying, since you always have to plan everything that you need beforehand. And of course it doesn't go like that. Food is always available (thank God) but if you really have an urgent need for something else, you cannot buy it immediately. For example, when I bought my bike, the back light suddenly stopped working. Since the shops are open only during my work day, I was not able to buy it. It is illegal to ride your bike without lights and I was wondering that would it be ok to tell the police that you just could not buy the lights?

Tässä nyt ne suurimmat erot, mitkä kohtaan lähes päivittäin siis. Tulen varmasti kirjoittamaan aiheesta vielä lisääkin, sillä kerrottavaa kyllä riittää! Hassua, että vaikka Suomi ja Hollanti ovat kuitenkin melko lähellä toisiaan, on kulttuurierot kuitenkin huomattavia. Tai  no toisaalta, on se Venäjäkin lähellä.. / These are the biggest differences that I face almost every day. I will most likely get back to this topic later since I have a lot to say about it. Funny how different Finland and Holland are even though in the end they are not that far away from each other. On the other hand, Russia is not far away either..
